Yes, I saw it - in the IMAX 3D theater. Yes, the visuals are quite amazing. I can't speak for the regular (non-3D) film but the 3D version has quite a few scenes that visually (CGI-wise, it's mostly all computer done) are head and shoulders above anything else in film at the moment. Based on that alone I do recommend you see it in the 3D theater. Anywhere else and you are taking your money in your own hands because... (possible spoilers)

... the plot is terrible and the acting is passable at best. It is a complete leftist love fest mashing together every liberal cause into one big Che-ist orgy. It is at some point in the movie: Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Corporation, Anti-Military, Anti-Industrialization/Technology (ironic, yes?), and has themes reminiscent of Dances With Wolves substituting Native Americans for the Na'Vi and the US Army for The Corporation (Not my idea, I completely stole that from another reviewer who I cannot recall just now - but plot wise, this movie is pretty much Dances with Wolves). See: The evil profit-loving humans come to destroy the peaceful caretakers of nature and take their land/resources. In that sense it is boring and there are no surprises. As noted by some other people there is also very little, if any, intentional humor; the movie is not funny.

I also noticed after reflecting on the movie a bit that the only minorities (all 2 of them, 3 if you count Weaver as a woman) in the film turned out to be heroes. All of the baddies I can remember seeing were white males. It could totally be a coincidence but it's something I noticed anyway.

Avatar does look spectacular though and has a decent bit of action to it. If that's what you look for in a movie you can probably find enough in Avatar to make it worth plunking down your dirty, capitalist money.
